A few days in the capital, with its hills, tiled façades and views over the Tagus, followed by a few days in the south, where the trip slows down around beaches, small towns and long lunches by the sea. Or the other way round: a holiday in the Algarve with a short day trip to Lisbon before flying home.

Most people make the journey by motorway and treat it as a transfer. It is the quickest option, but not always the most interesting one. Between Lisbon and the Algarve, there are Atlantic villages, old national roads and places where a short stop can change the whole day.

Choose the right route and the drive becomes more than the bit between hotel check-outs. It does not need to take several days. Leave early, keep the plan realistic and you can still arrive by evening, having seen more than toll booths, service stations and motorway signs.

Via the Costa Vicentina: the route along the Atlantic

For travellers who want the Atlantic close for much of the journey, this is the route to choose. It follows part of the Alentejo shoreline and the Costa Vicentina, with beaches, fishing villages and some of the most memorable roads in south-west Portugal before the Algarve begins.

After leaving Lisbon, head towards Setúbal, take the ferry across to Tróia and continue through Comporta, Melides, Sines, Porto Covo, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Zambujeira do Mar and Odeceixe. From there, the Algarve begins through the west coast, with Aljezur, Arrifana, Bordeira, Carrapateira, Vila do Bispo and Sagres as possible stops before continuing to Lagos, Portimão, Albufeira or Faro.

The real pull of this route is the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, one of Portugal’s most protected coastal areas, stretching between São Torpes and Burgau. It brings together cliffs, beaches, dunes and a very distinctive natural landscape.

To do the Lisbon to the Algarve journey along the coast in one day, you need a full day and a short list of stops. Trying to see everything will ruin the drive. Choose three or four places: coffee in Porto Covo, lunch in Vila Nova de Milfontes, a quick stop in Zambujeira do Mar and late afternoon in Odeceixe or Arrifana. If you are heading towards the western Algarve, continue through Aljezur and Sagres. For anyone driving from Lisbon to Portimão, this is one of the most memorable ways to arrive.

Via the EN2: Portugal’s classic road

The EN2 has an almost mythical reputation in Portugal. It runs from Chaves to Faro over roughly 739 km and crosses 35 municipalities, which explains the frequent comparisons with Route 66.

For an inland alternative on the Lisbon to the Algarve route, you do not need to drive the whole EN2. Join it further south, around Montemor-o-Novo, and continue through places such as Alcaçovas, Torrão, Ferreira do Alentejo, Castro Verde, Almodôvar, São Brás de Alportel and Faro.

This is a more inland drive, with less Atlantic and more open country. Beaches give way to plains, villages, roadside cafés, fields and towns where the journey slows down without becoming dull. The stretch between Almodôvar and São Brás de Alportel is particularly good, as the road moves from the hills into the Algarve, with bends, changes in altitude and a gradual arrival in the south.

The EN2 works well if you are heading to Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Loulé or São Brás de Alportel. It is also a good option in reverse, for anyone leaving the Algarve and returning to Lisbon by a road with more character than the motorway.

For a one-day trip, keep the plan simple: coffee in an Alentejo town, lunch in Castro Verde or Almodôvar, then enter the Algarve through São Brás de Alportel. This is not a route built around major attractions. Its appeal is smaller: a good lunch, a few quiet roads, a slower look at the south before the Algarve begins.

Via the Guadiana and Alqueva: the inland south

The third option is the least obvious, especially for anyone who thinks of the Lisbon to the Algarve journey only through the A2 or the coast. Head inland towards the Guadiana and the map changes: Castro Verde, Mértola, Serpa, Moura, Monsaraz, Alqueva and, after that, the descent into the Algarve.

It is not the most direct route if the aim is simply to arrive quickly. It is better for travellers who already know the coast and want a different kind of drive, with plains, river towns and historic villages rather than beach stops.

Castro Verde is part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is known for birdwatching, especially around Campo Branco, an important area for steppe birds.

Further east, Alqueva offers a very different pause: water, historic villages, vineyards, olive groves and open night skies. Dark Sky Alqueva has made this area a reference point for stargazing, with an observatory in Cumeada, near Reguengos de Monsaraz.

This route needs discipline. If you want to do it in one day between Lisbon and the Algarve, choose one main area. You might leave early, stop in Monsaraz and then continue south. Or choose Mértola, with lunch and a short walk before carrying on towards the Algarve through Alcoutim, Castro Marim or Tavira.

Which route should you choose?

Between the Costa Vicentina, the EN2 and the inland route through the Guadiana and Alqueva, there is more than one way to do the Lisbon to the Algarve route without surrendering the whole journey to the motorway.

Choose the Costa Vicentina for sea, cliffs and coastal villages. Choose the EN2 for a classic Portuguese road and a natural arrival into Faro. Choose the Guadiana and Alqueva route if you know the usual way south and want plains, river towns and castles.

The trick is not to treat these routes like a list to complete. In one day, you will not see everything. Choose fewer stops, leave enough time for the road and let the journey take up some space in the holiday.

If your Portugal itinerary includes both Lisbon and the Algarve, the journey between them does not have to be treated as empty time. Whether you are travelling from Lisbon to the Algarve, planning Lisbon to Portimão by car or adding a day trip to Lisbon from the south, the road can add something of its own.

For many travellers, the route from Lisbon to the Algarve becomes part of the same Portugal itinerary.
